If you read the one star reviews, you will find that most people who wrote them are bothered by the Western Digital Smartware Software. Let me be perfectly clear. The Western Digital Software is NOT removable without a hardware hack, but you can prevent it from auto-running or auto-launching IF you update the drive software to the latest version. This software is necessary for an advertised feature of the drive: Data Encryption. It also does one click backups, and has some other utilities as well. Finder reported 999.2 GB Free on this disk ( Under Snow Leopard 10.6.2 )... So about 800 MB is used for overhead to do what it does. Paraphrased for size - Read the original review here.

I've discarded several portable drives either for their large size, or needing a power port in addition to a USB, price high, insisting on using the manufacturer's software when I wanted to decide what software I wanted to use. A simple delete got rid of this manufacturer's software, I installed my own, and I had exactly what I wanted, a reliable 500 gb, small portable external drive that runs a backup program of my choosing. A hard disk drive has two definitions:-

1). In technical words:- It is a non-volatile storage device that stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating rigid (i.e. hard) platters with magnetic surfaces.

2). In simple and understandable words:- It is a very small object which is used to store your operating system and other software which is used for smooth running of your machine. These hard drives are used for storing your data.

Hard drives are of many types, generally they are internal but now as the use of the computer is increasing day by day the external drive is also needed to store the data. These external drives are like floppy drive, CD or DVD drive or external hard drive. This external drive is used for taking backups, storing your data etc. in case if in future your data gets corrupted in your internal hard drive, you can get back your data with the help of these drives. These drives are also helpful when you want to take your data with anywhere you want. External hard drives are connected to your PC with the help of USB2.0 or by firewire. Firewire cannot be supported by every brand hard disk. Firewire is able to work 3 times more faster than USB2.0.These external drives have many features which are mentioned below:-
