First of all I highly recommend using Dropbox ([...]) to back up upwards of 100Gb of personal files in a networked environment. Then install this drive and watch all of your files come back to the drive automatically, especially since the drive is so fast. I did some research into the various SSD drives and for the price and performance (200 Mbps read, 220 mpbs write) this is a very good value. Consider that these drives were so much more expensive only a few months ago but not worth it to wait any longer. Replace your old HHD. This takes care of the need of having to worry about hard drive failures, degragmenting (SSDs don’t need to be defragmented) and other general failures. I would not compare it to G-Skill Titan, OCZ Apex or any SSDs that use JMicron controller, because Vertex uses ARM based controller with 32MB and 64MB caches. If I’m not mistaken all JMicron based controllers on SSD have only 32KB cache, KB! Though performance might be somewhat similar to listed above, Vertex has one core difference: no stuttering. But, of course it is my personal experience with this drive, and you might want to read more reviews. I would probably compare Vertex to Intel X25 series, and Vertex surely wins here with its price. I think OCZ finally made it with it’s Vertex series by offering excellent performance, stuttering free SSD for still reasonable price per MB. Paraphrased for size – Read the original review here.

If you read the one star reviews, you will find that most people who wrote them are bothered by the Western Digital Smartware Software. Let me be perfectly clear. The Western Digital Software is NOT removable without a hardware hack, but you can prevent it from auto-running or auto-launching IF you update the drive software to the latest version. This software is necessary for an advertised feature of the drive: Data Encryption. It also does one click backups, and has some other utilities as well. I bought this portable HDD specifically to back up my iTunes directory, which is approaching 300GB. I also own another Iomega 500 GB portable HDD, and when I ordered this one I thought I was getting another identical unit. This one has been updated, and apparently for the better. This one is shaped like a slightly large deck of cards rather than as a whiskey flask configuration like the older model. It also has nice little rubber feet. But the big improvement seems to be that it is somewhat thriftier regarding whether it could draw sufficient power from the USB ports. This unit easily functioned in one of my computers in which the USB port was insufficient to power the earlier model. I do not know if this is a quirk or whether Iomega improved the design. Once you finally have made the smart decision of buying an external hard drive or a solid state hard drive now it’s time to put the files on your drive. This is not a very hard task; in fact it’s actually quite easy to do. First you need to connect the hard drive to an USB port on your computer or laptop. Wait for the pop-up to come which says that windows has detected a new hardware (your external hard drive). If this does not come up, then just go to my computer and double click the external hard drive icon. Now, you can open up the folder on the external hard drive and whatever you need to be on there, you can just put it in by simply dragging and dropping. Just select the file and hold it and just move it into the external hard drive folder. Simple as that! There are many solid state hard drive benefits and solid state hard drive reliability is amazing!
